Our Tips on How to Make your Landscaping Look Great All Year Long

Lawn Care

While the soil is still warm and we are usually in the middle of a bit of a rainy season, the fall is a great time to seed or overseed your lawn so that it gets a great head start before winter sets in.   There are different kinds of grass seed depending on whether your grass is shaded by trees, is used a lot by pets and children or dries out quickly.

Seeds are often mixed with soil and fertilizer when you purchase, which helps get the seeds germinating and growing quickly.   Keep the area well-watered for the first couple of weeks after you spread the seed to give your grass the chance to get rooted and well on its way before winter sets in.

Landscaping

Fall is a fantastic time for cleaning up your flower beds.  Make your landscaping look great all year long by collecting all those fabulous seeds from your annuals to start sewing and growing beautiful annuals again in the spring.  Some Ontario annual flowers such as 4 o’clocks (Mirabilis jalapa) have huge seeds that they can be planted directly into your flower beds in the spring.  Four o’clocks come in varieties include flowers in shades of white, yellow, pink, red, and magenta colors, as well as splashed/marbled blooms in orange and red. Sometimes, plants may produce flowers sporting different colors on the same plant. Four o’clocks bloom from mid-summer all the way until frost.

September/October are perfect times to take a look at your hosta plants to see if they need dividing.  To divide them properly, dig up the whole clump and divide with a sharp straight edge spade and replant in to new areas of your shady garden.   Hosta varieties come in all different shades of green and variegated leaves and their flowers range from small mauve to large white clusters.   Mixing up hostas in a shady garden can create a magnificent landscaping focal point to your garden.

Leaf Cleanup

It’s a great idea to keep up with leaf clean up so that if your City provides leaf cleaning services you have all your leaves at the curb ready for the city cleanup.   This means you don’t have to take the extra time to bag all your leaves for collection.

And don’t forget to clean out your eavestroughs after the leaves have fallen.  This will help water from the fall rains to be directed to your downspout instead of over flowing out of your eavestroughs.

If you need help with your eavestrough maintenance we are just a call away.  Contact us at 905 512 2866 if you need eavestrough maintenance this fall.

Fences and Decks

Before winter sets in it’s a great time to inspect your decks and fences and replace broken boards.  With heavier winds and rain in the forecast, you want to make sure you have sturdy fences that can withstand the snow and ice buildup over the winter.

Deck board replacement means you are keeping out uninvited animals such as racoons, skunks and squirrels from choosing your deck area as their winter hideaway.

Water Feature Maintenance

It’s important to service your water feature properly before winter sets in.  Not only do you need to turn off your water source and blow out the lines, the fall is an ideal time to clean up your plant life around your water feature so the area is ready for new plantings in the Spring.

If you are too busy to get your water feature area ready for the winter, give as a call at 905-512-2866 and Emerald Property Services can take care of winterizing your water feature.  Your water feature if properly maintained will make your landscaping look great all year long.
