2020 was the year that everyone was out in their back garden every single day it was the least bit warm.  Some people are handy and transformed their outdoor space.  If you haven’t had a chance to think about what to do with your outside space, here are 3 awesome ideas for your deck, fence, and patio.

Ideas for your Deck

Decks don’t have to be one dimensional in shape or even one level.  There are many options to choose from.  Transitional decks are very popular.  If your top deck is level with the door which opens to the outside, it is great to use this as the seating area.  You can either purchase outdoor garden furniture or have seating included in the deck planning.   There are so many different choices. Whether you shop at a deluxe outdoor furniture store such as D.O.T. or at one of the big box stores such as Lowes, Home Depot or Canadian Tire or even Wayfair, there will be plenty of choice within your budget.

You can separate your deck seating area from your grilling area with a few steps to create an outdoor kitchen area on a lower deck.   Solar lights can be added to the stairs to guide you when stepping from one deck level to another.

To mix the wood decking with greenery you can add planter boxes to the ends of benches or purchase long lasting upright planters from stores such as Costco.

Ideas for Your Fences

There are so many different kinds of fences depending on the function of the fence.   If you are choosing a vertical fence for privacy, there are several different styles to choose from.   You can go with a simple flat fence or a fence that is more interesting.

There also several options for fence caps from wood, plastic and copper.  And the top of the fence can have its own spectacular look.  Ornamental touches such as trellis entrance ways covered with wisteria, or clematis can add another element to the final inviting entrance to your fenced garden.

Ideas for Your Patio

There are some awesome ideas for your patio.  One of the best ideas for the hot summer months is to put a pergola over your patio.

There are many options for a pergola.  You can have Emerald Property Services build you a pergola from scratch or you can purchase a pergola kit from Wayfair.  If you don’t want to install the kit yourself, Emerald Property Services would be happy to put it together and install it for you.

For the roof of your pergola there are several options depending on how much sun or shade you want over your patio area.

Popular choices are wooden slats which can be either thin or wide boards or a mixture of both.   Another option is a canvas type roof which looks like “sails”.   The roof can be flat or slanted and the style depends on which goes best with the house design.

When designing your patio, think of the use for yourself and your family.  If you have young children you might want to combine the patio with a play area.   Kids love to play in a sandbox and run their toys up and down the patio.  Toy storage might be just what you need to hide the outdoor toys when not in use or when you are entertaining your friends in the evening.

Lighting is an important consideration.   Again, there is such a wide variety to choose from.   If you have electrical outlets outside, you might want to string outdoor lights across the top of a pergola roof.  Solar string lights are also very popular.  For subtle lighting you might want to go with minimal solar pathway LED lights from Wayfair and use a tray of candles on the patio table.

For extending your outdoor bbq season, in the cool fall, why not consider patio heaters.  They might be a little hard to source since we are now in the middle of fall but as soon as you can get them on order the sooner you will be able to stay outdoors longer.

If you want to go with a firepit, please note that in Hamilton, Ancaster and Burlington you will need a permit.  For Burlington the form for the permit is available online.   Make sure you comply with your local municipality before your purchase a fire pit.   Fire pits come in wood burning or propane and your choice might come down to whether you want to toast marshmallows with the smell of the forest or if you just want the modern, low slung look.
